it's called a joke, dammit

A few weeks ago, a freak rainstorm happened around the time of we were supposed to go home from work (sidebar: I miss having Signal Number 3 making an impact in my life), and at 6:30, as I was heading home, I noticed that quite a number of people were still at the office.

Int. Accepting Torture Office - Recruitment - Night:
(dialogue translated from Tagalog)
J: aren't you going home? the rain's not so bad anymore.
Officemate #1: no umbrella.
Officemate #2: aren't you going to get wet?
J: I'll be fine. But, why? Are you going to multiply if rain falls on you?
(no response)
J: um... Gremlins?
(nothing)
(J leaves the office.)

Then yesterday, when there was a discrepancy in a candidate's records (let's call it University of Tuguegarao), that the candidate's Graduation Order of Record (or something like), is actually registered to another student, I again made a stupid joke:

J: Maybe he went to University of Tuguegarao - Berkeley.
Teammates: (nothing)
J: ...Not LA?
Teammates: (still nothing)
Teammate #1: (turning back to other teammate, ignoring J) So what will we tell the candidate?

Frak!!!!

WOW. The situation's getting really dire.
You could try to do what I did and sucker one of your friends to work there too.
She recently asked me, out of the blue, "Who did you hang out with before I got hired? ...Because the people there are so...baduy."

Dude you are still in the early stages of dicovering that your type of witty is not really recognized here. Here, before you make a joke, you first have to think if your audience are the kind of people who would have watched the same movies or read the same books or articles that you did. In which case those people are hard to find here.
