you wait and see when the smoke clears

When Alanis Morissette and Ryan Reynolds broke up, I thought, pity: They were so adorable together. Like when Conan had both of them on the show and presented an If They Mated picture, they were both, "well. I guess children are off the list now."

When Ryan Reynolds hooked up with one Hollywood starlet after another, I thought, dammit, Ryan, I love you, but why must you be so typically male with the new hot bod?

And when Ryan Reynolds hooked up and subsequently got engaged to Scarlett Johansson, I thought, well, fine, Ryan. I loved you once...

Yet when Alanis announced a new album, with the lovely, hint-hint-nudge-nudge title of Flavors of Entanglement, I thought, awww. 'S okay, Alanis. We still love you, even if only because you gave the world You Oughta Know. And Perfect. And.... okay, you gave the world Jagged Little Pill. I don't understand why you did the acoustic album, but I loved it anyway.

And I remember, when they broke up, I wondered if Ryan would have an You Oughta Know, a Hands Clean. I'll have to listen to the upcoming album, and find out.

Which reminds me of that same Late Night show, when Ryan and Alanis were on. This little exchange happened:
Conan: She's (Alanis) known for her confessional songs, aren't you worried, that if you break up she'll be in Central Park or somewhere performing her number one hit single 'I Hate Ryan Reynolds' to a crowd of thousands, maybe even millions?
Ryan: Well, you know, I've been known in my day to write a haiku or two.

When news broke that they broke up, Speedbump and I both went, "where's that haiku?"

We watch way too much TV and care way too much about these people.

But, you know, it's Berg.
