Okay, yes, I admit it: I love Gossip Girl. I love the VMVO cast as Gossip Girl, I love the absolute campiness of it all. As I told Speedbump last Friday, if 90210 and Popular spawned, it would come up with Gossip Girl. And what's greater for the teen genre than 90210 and Popular? That's right, its spawn.
But as I also told Speedbump, more than anything else, my love for Gossip Girl is a toss up between the VMVO/Gossip Girl voiceover by Kristen Bell, and Blair Waldorf as played by Leighton Meester. Yes, she was Justine, the Britney-like teen pop star on the first season of Entourage. Which makes her that much cooler, yes?
And, yes, she's the resident bitch of the show, but isn't that why we all loved Nicole Julian and Mary Cherry (Popular)? Why we loved the Queen C (Cordelia, Buffy)? Why everyone absolutely worships her shiny special-ness Glory (Buffy, again)? Don't we all just love the bitch with a heart of gold?
So, yes. I love Blair. Because in a scene all about how Dan, Jenny, Eric and Serena are all reeling over the idea of Dan and Jenny's dad having dated Eric and Serena's mom, Blair cuts through all that with: "Fascinating. There's a garage door in the middle of the room!" in the best delivery ever heard in teen soap history.
...
Another reason why one should love Gossip Girl? It doesn't even try to pretend it's based in reality (hello, spawn of Popular. I'm so glad we've met). It also echoes a conversation Speedbump and I had last Friday, regarding... wait for it... High School Musical.
Let me explain. Speedbump and I are awash in a sea of confusion regarding the popularity of this Disney TV franchise, especially since Zac Efron is so incredibly gay. And the songs suck. Sure, Swing Kids and Newsies also had the singing and dancing, but watch Christian Bale dance and there's nothing gay about it (sure, that could be my Christian Bale lust speaking, but... ). Now, watch Zac Efron dance, and, as Speedbump would put it, ring the alarm. Paging Brian Kinney. And is there anything gayer than his song and dance number on the golf course in the sequel? I'm not bothering to find a link to that, but the next time Disney interrupts your Kim Possible/Monsters Inc./Toy Story viewing with this "music video", fight the itch to switch the channel, and be stunned by how someone so obviously gay can be a heartthrob (oops, Auti, sorry, I forgot about you ahit-pogi N'Sync-er. hehe).
Which leads me back to why I love Gossip Girl: in the most recent US episode, Jenny's pseudo-boyfriend gets outed, and a sidekick/henchwoman notes to Jenny: "Now you know how Vanessa Hudgens feels."
Hee.
"Hope that wasn't the wrong answer, S. This test doesn't test on the curve."

Zac Efron dances while doing golf? Does that involve a golf club? Cause first there's the dance with the balls and now there's a dance with a club. Balls and club. Hmmmmmmm...for all those people who swear that T.V. has a gay agenda, well this might be evidence 1 and 2.
Of course, as you've said; if someone like Christian Bale or Robert Sean Leonard did these dance numbers our thoughts wouldn't stray there. But since it's Zac, well you know.
Also the kid playing Serena's gay brother was the little Alexander in the movie Alexander. Now as we all know that character also turned out to be gay or bi, whatever. Nothing. Just an observation.
