Granted, that's not saying much, but that is the positive side of lowered expectations.
Having read the book (it's better than The Da Vinci Code, but that's not saying much), and knowing film adaptations are never as good as you want them to be, I was just hoping that this... wouldn't suck. And it didn't. Kind of. Having read the book, and realizing they cut out a whole portion to get straight to the action, viewers had to endure the very long, very talky and annoying exposition-as-dialogue. As Jessica Zafra puts it:
Way too much exposition in the first half-hour, it’s like having the book read to you in a monotone... They’re racing to find the explosive device and Tom Hanks spends too much time explaining his research to the CERN physicist. Hoy, di ba nagmamadali kayo?
Yes, I'm glad Ewan McGregor is actually doing movies again. But like Nicole Kidman, he does so much better in smaller movies than when trying to be in a blockbuster. But, ohh, he looks decent again.
I understand that the filmmakers tried to raise the ire of the Vatican with this movie, but the Vatican answered with a "meh". I would think they'd be far more concerned that Mr. Nudey McNudeypants was cast as a priest.
And what kind of scholar/expert on ancient symbols and the Church doesn't know Latin? Dude, that's just duh.
At least nobody's trying to convince us the leading ladies want Tom Hanks.
