voice of your soul

years ago, a friend of mine related to me how she'd seen an interview where the singer (i think it was toni braxton, but i'm not sure) related how she loved babyface's songs because they were the "voice of her soul". and she (my friend) then told me that she thought it over, and has decided that the voice of her soul is Skin, the singer of the now-defunct skunk anansie.

she asked me the question, who is the voice of my soul, and i had stalled. i am still stalling.
i have asked the questions to various friends, and some of the answers have been cartman (south park), kenny (still south park), chrissie hynde (the pretenders), sarah mclachlan - she later switched to say it's dido...

i'm thinking, hmmn. nowadays i'd like to think it's melissa auf der maur, because she's got soft vocals that couteract the anger laden in her songs. or maybe, if i want to be real artiste about it, i'll say sinead o'connor's early stuff.
kay hanley (letters to cleo) is too happy, so she'll be my Happy Voice. nina gordon (formerly the blond in veruca salt) has become dangerously pop. louise post (veruca salt) can be a little too angry for me. natalie merchant is too mature for my soul.
maybe i'll just say the whole lilith fair alumni are voices of my soul, but that's.. so lesbian.
melissa etheridge's songs have become too happy, and not in a good way.
janis joplin's too raw.

male singers? jeff buckley, probably. but i don't have enough of his songs to be a fair judge.
scarily, some of the songs lately that "speak" to me are from saliva, and damn josey scott's voice is good.

current favorite song: the setting superstar, being sung by michael stipe, river phoenix and jeff buckley.
have i mentioned in this blog how still in love i am with river phoenix? no? well, i will soon.

anyway. maybe my soul is too chaotic to have just one voice.

what about you? who's the voice of your soul?
