theoretical physics major ftw
My foray into the fandom of Sailor Moon was a long time ago and came and went very swiftly, but until now, I still adore Sailor Pluto.
When I first started watching the program, I couldn’t decide which Sailor Warrior I liked the most: Sailor Mercury was the smart one, but Sailor Mars was badass (also had anger management issues). Sailor Jupiter was goofy and weird, but Sailor Venus was the quiet one. Of course, I hated Sailor Moon, because she was pretty useless and would.not.stop.talking.
Then came the three senior Sailor Stars (or Outer Senshi, or whatever). Sailors Neptune and Uranus were a package deal, and depicted as being super cool, so they meant nothing to me.
And then came Sailor Pluto.
She was part of a triumvirate with Michiru and Haruka (Sailors Neptune and Uranus), but Setsuna wasn’t quite… there. There was something just ‘not right’ with her, and I’m not just talking about her pretty dark green hair or supposedly being in college. She was the oldest of the bunch, but she didn’t seem to mind being around these hyperactive children (the original Sailor Stars). And even weirder, she seemed to be the only one who could deal with the ultra-annoying Chibi-Moon.
(And she had that wicked staff-thingy, which, other than to hit people with, hardly seemed to have any purpose.)
But I didn’t just like her because of her quiet demeanor or seemingly-broody demeanor. There was a sadness to her that I really empathized with, that I wanted to learn more about. (But, of course, this is the Sailor Moon cartoon, and not Sailor Pluto, so I don’t know what I was thinking.)
Then I watched one of their movies (because manga was so frakking expensive then), and, ohh. I really shouldn’t have, because while her built-in sadness (and the staff) was explained, and it came hand-in-hand with some awesomeness, there was a catch.
Now, I can’t remember which version of Sailor Moon it was (long story), but the point is this: Sailor Pluto can stop time.
I mean, badass, right? The lady can rip a tear in the space-time continuum and save the day. Except, of course, when she uses this power, she forfeits her life, so there’s that unfortunate side effect.
I want to rewatch Sailor Moon just for her, but I’m not sure if I can stand everyone else long enough until she shows up late in the program.
