separating the fans from the posers, part 1

Erika asked, and so I accepted. We are going to go watch Incubus in concert on March 9.

We are watching along with Speedbump, and both Erika and Speedbump had watched Incubus the last time they were here. A concert that my cousin had watched, too.

I bring this up because, well, this brings up a conversation my cousin and I had just before that concert. My cousin had bought Brandon Boyd and company's earlier albums (I think, at the time, Morning View was the latest album). I teased him about it, citing that he wanted to be able to sing along (he doesn't sing. He plays guitar quite well, though). His response was (please note that dry wit and irony, sarcasm also included, are part and parcel in verbal exchanges among myself and my male cousins), "I have to know the early songs. That separates the real fans from the posers."

Right. Of course.

I will be a poser for the Incubus concert, of course, because I don't even own a single album of theirs. Sure, I like them enough, and I'm not in it to see Brandon shirtless, but I would have to confess that I won't be singing along to their songs. I might not even be able to sing along to their hits. Is this going to be a waste of (choke) P1000? Erika says Incubus rocked last time, and when it comes to music, I trust Erika.

Seeing Incubus (a band with six albums) is also much more reasonable than the ticket prices for Maroon 5 (a band with two albums).

And it will have to do until I get to live the fantasy of club-hopping to see bands I actually like love.

"I know about your Valhalla of Decadence, and I shouldn't have let him go. He is not ready for your world of compromised values, and diminished brain cells that you throw away like confetti. Am I speaking clearly to you?"
(from Almost Famous)

Sigh. Remember the days when Cameron Crowe movies were cool? The songs are still great, but...
